How to Choose Execution and Consensus Clients?

A validator requires two clients. The Execution Client processes transactions and stores state; the Consensus Client handles consensus and block signing. The choice of combination affects performance and network health. Avoid the dominant client: if its share exceeds two-thirds, the network becomes less resilient to faults. Erigon syncs 2-3 times faster than Geth but consumes more RAM.

Minimum requirements for home staking: CPU with 4 cores (AMD Ryzen or Intel Core i5+), 16 GB RAM (32 GB for Erigon), 2 TB NVMe SSD (HDD is not suitable), stable network of 25 Mbps (preferably symmetric), and 99.9%+ uptime (long downtime = penalties).

How to Set Up an Ethereum Validator?

Key Generation and Security

Validator keys are generated from a seed phrase on an offline machine. Use ethereum/staking-deposit-cli or Wagyu Key Gen. There are two types of keys: the signing key (BLS) signs attestations every epoch — it must be online; withdrawal credentials control ETH withdrawals — store them strictly offline, on a hardware wallet. Compromising the signing key risks slashing from double signing, and losing the withdrawal key means losing the entire stake.

Step-by-Step Client Launch

  1. Install the Execution client (Nethermind or Erigon recommended) and configure its synchronization. Sync takes from 6 hours to 2 days.
  2. Install the Consensus client (Lighthouse/Teku) and point it to the Execution client's endpoint.
  3. Import validator keys into the validator_keys folder.
