Without storyboarding, production teams start with a blurry vision of the final result, discover mismatches mid-work, and redo. We develop storyboards that save your money: one day of a storyboard artist's work prevents a week of rework for animators and technical artists. Teams using storyboards before production spend 3 times less time on rework — this is not a metaphor, but a result of our practice. We will evaluate your project and offer the optimal format. Over the last 10 years we have completed more than 50 projects across different genres — from RPG to horror, from mobile platforms to high-end PC graphics.
Why storyboarding is critical for game dev?
Without a storyboard, the team starts production with a vague idea of the final result, discovers inconsistencies mid-work, and redoes. Our experience (10+ years in game dev, 50+ completed projects) shows: storyboarding is the cheapest way to avoid composition, staging, and timing errors early on. Contact us — and we will show you how this works in practice.
Which storyboard format to choose for your scene?
Not every game scene requires one type of storyboard. Different tasks — different formats. The choice depends on the project stage and the required precision.
Thumbnail storyboard. The fastest option: small sketches (5×8 cm), schematic figures, only key moments. Used for initial concept alignment. It takes a few hours, allows you to assess the flow and rhythm of the scene before detailed elaboration.
Rough storyboard. A5-A4 frames, clear poses and expressions, camera movement indications (arrows). Sufficient for an animatic — a sequence of static frames with timecode showing the scene's timing. Most production decisions are made at the rough storyboard stage.
Clean storyboard. Finalized frames with details, captions, timecodes. Used as official documentation for complex productions with large teams or when working with outsourcing — when a document without double interpretations is needed.
| Type | Size | Detail | Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thumbnail | 5×8 cm | Minimal | Initial concept |
| Rough | A5–A4 | Medium | Animatic, production decisions |
| Clean | A4+ with captions | High | Documentation, outsourcing |
What a good storyboard shows
Each storyboard frame contains three layers of information:
Visual composition. Position of characters in the frame, horizon line, foreground/background separation. Bad storyboard — characters centered in every frame, no rule of thirds, no depth. Good — each frame reads as an independent composition and simultaneously fits into the flow.
Movement. Camera movement arrows (pan, tilt, dolly, crane) and character movements. Without arrows, the storyboard shows "from where" and "to where", but not "how". A typical loss of information: a 30-degree camera move left looks the same on paper as a 90-degree move — without explicit angle indication.
Staging. Characters must read as silhouettes. If two characters blend in the frame — that's a staging problem. At the storyboard stage it's visible and easy to fix. In finished animation — hours of rework.
Specifics of storyboarding for in-engine scenes
For cutscenes that render in-engine (Timeline + Cinemachine), the storyboard contains additional technical layers:
Camera lens notes. Approximate Field of View for each angle. Wide angle (FOV 70–90°) for scale and dynamics, telephoto (FOV 30–50°) for spatial compression and character isolation. This affects Cinemachine Virtual Camera setup.
Depth of field indicator. A note whether the foreground is sharp, background, or both — for Post-processing Depth of Field setup. Shallow DOF for emotional close-ups, deep DOF for action and environment shots.
Transition type. Between each pair of frames: hard cut / dissolve / wipe. In Timeline this is the CinemachineBlend setting.
VFX marks. Notes where in the frame particle effects, shader effects, light interactions should be.
Technical storyboarding for Cinemachine: example
For a dialogue scene we specify: FOV 50° (telephoto), shallow DOF on the character's face, hard cut between lines. For an action scene: FOV 80° (wide), deep DOF, wipe transitions for location changes. These notes directly transfer to Timeline settings.Storyboarding reduces rework time by 3 times compared to working without it. This is confirmed by our practice — in 90% of cases projects with storyboarding are delivered on time, without it delays amount to 30–50%.
"Storyboarding is the bridge between direction and production," says our lead storyboard artist with 15 years of experience.
How the work is structured
Work begins with a briefing: we receive a literary script or scene description, style references, technical constraints (platform, engine capabilities). Then — thumbnail pass to agree on the general flow, then rough storyboard to approve each frame, then clean pass if necessary.
An important stage is review with animators. The animator looks at the storyboard and says: "this pose is physically impossible for this character" or "there isn't enough time between these two frames for a transition" — this needs to be known before animation starts.
The storyboard is approved before any production begins. Changes after production start are rework, and they are expensive.
What is included in the work
- Gathering references and technical constraints
- Thumbnail pass (agree on general flow)
- Rough storyboard (approve each frame)
- Clean pass with technical notes (FOV, DOF, transition type, VFX marks)
- Review with animators and incorporating revisions
- Final documentation (PDF/images with timecodes)
We guarantee each frame reads as an independent composition and fits into the flow. Get a consultation — we will evaluate your project and offer timelines.
| Type and volume | Timeline |
|---|---|
| Thumbnail storyboard (1–2 minute scene) | 1–2 days |
| Rough storyboard (1–2 minutes) | 3–5 days |
| Clean storyboard with technical notes (1–2 minutes) | 5–10 days |
| Full package (multiple scenes, 5–10 minutes of content) | 3–5 weeks |
