Preparing Screenshots for Google Play Listing
Google Play shows screenshots as a horizontal scroll in search. The first screenshot is the only thing most users see before deciding to tap the listing. Yet Google allows screenshots with minimum 320 px resolution — a trap: technically valid, visually deadly for conversion.
Google Play Technical Requirements
| Type | Minimum | Maximum | Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone screenshot | 320×320 px | 3840×3840 px | JPEG / PNG |
| Tablet screenshot (7") | 320×320 px | 3840×3840 px | JPEG / PNG |
| Tablet screenshot (10") | 320×320 px | 3840×3840 px | JPEG / PNG |
| Feature Graphic | 1024×500 px | — | JPEG / PNG |
| Icon | 512×512 px | — | PNG 32-bit |
Mandatory: minimum 2 phone screenshots. Feature Graphic is technically optional, but without it the listing looks incomplete, and it's used as preview when browsing the Play Store.
Recommended actual resolution — 1080×1920 px for portrait (Full HD). Matches most modern Android devices and looks sharp on high-density screens.
Difference from App Store
Google Play has no mandatory requirement for specific device types (like 6.7" and 5.5" at Apple). One set of phone screenshots is used for all phones. But: if you upload 16:9 screenshots for a 20:9 device, the search preview shows black bars.
Optimal ratio today: 9:19.5 (approximately 1080×2340 px) — matches most modern devices without notch cropping.
Feature Graphic: 1024×500 Banner
Feature Graphic is shown above screenshots in the listing and used as preview when promoting. Not a place for a screenshot — it's a banner with logo or key visual. Text should be minimal: Google overlays the app name and "Install" button over Feature Graphic in some display formats.
Design for Android
Android audience is used to more diversity in form factor. Device mockups for Android: Pixel 8 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S24, OnePlus. Using only one device type is fine, but Pixel looks neutral and doesn't alienate Samsung users.
Popular cropping tools: Figma (Mockup, Device Frames plugins), Canva (Google Play templates), AppLaunchpad.
Localization
Play Console allows uploading different screenshot sets for each locale. Minimum — default (fallback for all locales without individual screenshots).
Google Play Experiments allows A/B testing screenshots — built into Play Console. Test runs on real traffic percentage, then Console shows conversion data for each variant. Real tool for listing optimization without third-party services.
Promo Video
YouTube video link in Google Play listing — displays instead of Feature Graphic if present. 30–90 seconds, must not contain ads for other apps or policy-violating content. Auto-plays without sound in some display formats.
Process
Capture raw screenshots from device or emulator at working resolution.
Design frame layout: backgrounds, captions, device mockups, Feature Graphic.
Adapt for tablet sizes if needed.
Prepare localized versions.
Upload to Play Console, set up screenshot A/B test if desired.
Timeline Estimates
Basic screenshot set (phone, one language) + Feature Graphic — 1 day. Full set with tablet versions and 3–5 language localization — 2–3 days.
