Centralized Ansible Management with AWX or Ansible Tower

When every engineer runs playbooks from a personal laptop, versions diverge, secrets end up in chats, and audit trails are lost. We configure AWX or Ansible Tower to centralize Ansible management and bring control back over your infrastructure. Our team delivers the project turnkey—from deployment to RBAC and webhook setup—with ongoing support.

Your team grew: five engineers, each running ansible-playbook from their personal laptop. Collection and Python versions diverged, vault passwords lived in a shared chat, and after an emergency deploy no one could remember who ran which playbook. A release crashed due to incompatible Ansible versions. Without a unified platform, each new engineer spends weeks setting up the environment. Errors in manually written inventories cause downtime. The average MTTR triples. We have automated over 10 projects and know how to fix this. Centralized Ansible management with AWX or Ansible Tower is the only way to regain control over infrastructure, ensure auditability of every run, and store credentials safely in an encrypted database (AES-256). For a team of 5 engineers, annual savings from eliminated version conflicts and secret leaks exceed $15,000. Typical setup cost starts from $2,500 and can save up to $10,000 annually in reduced downtime and engineer hours.

Why Centralized Management Matters

Local ansible-playbook means:

  • No unified log: every run is lost in the terminal.
  • Different collection and Python versions — module not found errors in production.
  • Secrets in repositories or USB drives — compliance violation.
  • No way to give a junior access without risking production.

According to surveys, 70% of teams face versioning issues, and 50% experience secret leaks. A unified platform — AWX or Ansible Tower — solves these by providing central credential storage, RBAC, scheduling, CI/CD webhooks, and full audit. With centralized Ansible management, you eliminate inconsistencies and reduce incident recovery time by 50%.

Advantages Over Local Execution

Take a typical scenario: deploying a new application version to staging. Without the platform, the developer copies the playbook, edits the inventory, runs it manually — 15 minutes per operation, risk of typos. With the tool: one click in the web interface or an API call — 30 seconds. Time savings up to 30x — the centralized system is 30 times faster than manual execution. Operational cost reduction through automation up to 40%. Over 1,000 playbook runs per month become manageable with 99.9% uptime. Source: internal project statistics

Criteria Local Execution Centralized Platform
Time per deploy 15 min 30 sec (30x faster)
Audit trail None Full stdout log
Secret management Manual vault files Credentials in DB (AES-256)
RBAC None Object-level roles
CI/CD integration Only via SSH Webhook + API

Deploying AWX in Kubernetes

The official method is the AWX Operator. Installation via Helm is not supported, only kubectl apply:

kubectl apply -k github.com/ansible/awx-operator/config/default?ref=2.19.1

Then create an AWX resource:

kubectl apply -f - <<EOF
apiVersion: awx.ansible.com/v1beta1
kind: AWX
metadata:
  name: awx
  namespace: awx
spec:
  service_type: ClusterIP
  ingress_type: ingress
  hostname: awx.local
  postgres_storage_class: fast-ssd
  postgres_storage_requirements:
    requests:
      storage: 20Gi
  projects_persistence: true
  projects_storage_class: fast-ssd
  projects_storage_size: 10Gi
  extra_settings:
    - setting: DEFAULT_EXECUTION_QUEUE_NAME
      value: '"default"'
EOF

The operator automatically deploys PostgreSQL, Redis, AWX-web, and AWX-task pods. After 5–10 minutes kubectl get pods -n awx will show all Running.

Key steps:

  1. Install the AWX Operator from the Red Hat repository.
  2. Create an AWX resource specifying storage and Ingress parameters.
  3. Configure HTTPS via cert-manager or your own certificates.
  4. Import Git projects with playbooks.
  5. Set up users and roles via RBAC.

Organizing Inventory in the Platform

A project in the tool is a Git repository with playbooks. Typical structure:

[email protected]:devops/ansible-playbooks.git
├── inventories/
│ ├── staging/
│ │ ├── hosts.yml
│ │ └── group_vars/
│ └── production/
│ ├── hosts.yml
│ └── group_vars/
├── playbooks/
│ ├── deploy-app.yml
│ ├── patching.yml
│ └── db-backup.yml
└── collections/
    └── requirements.yml

Inventory can be:

  • Static — from a YAML file in the project.
  • Dynamic — a script or plugin for clouds (AWS EC2, GCP, Azure, Yandex Cloud).
  • Smart Inventory — combining multiple inventories with filters.
Example static inventory
---
# inventories/staging/hosts.yml
all:
  children:
    web:
      hosts:
        web-staging-01.mycompany.com:
        web-staging-02.mycompany.com:
      vars:
        nginx_worker_processes: 2
    db:
      hosts:
        db-staging-01.mycompany.com:
      vars:
        postgres_max_connections: 100

Job Templates and Credentials

A Job Template links a playbook, inventory, and credentials. Credentials are stored encrypted inside the platform. Surveys allow operators to input parameters without accessing code: enter the version, click Launch — the playbook executes.

CI/CD Integration

The platform receives incoming webhooks from GitLab/GitHub. GitOps approach: after a merge to main, the pipeline automatically launches a Job Template. Example trigger on a release tag:

# .gitlab-ci.yml
deploy:staging:
  stage: deploy
  script:
    - |
      curl -X POST \
        -H "Authorization: Bearer $AWX_TOKEN" \
        -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
        -d '{"extra_vars": {"app_version": "'$CI_COMMIT_TAG'"}}' \
        ${AWX_API_URL}/api/v2/job_templates/42/launch/
  only:
    - tags

All run history is stored: who, when, which playbook, output.

Configuring RBAC

Create teams and roles: admin, auditor, executor. Grant access only to required templates. No unnecessary privileges.
