Rclone Backup Configuration for Cloud Storage

Backup without centralized management often leads to lost data and slow recovery. We configure Rclone for automatic synchronization with cloud storage, ensuring client-side encryption and reliability. Our team delivers the project turnkey—from audit to ongoing support—so you can trust your backups.

Imagine: you have 20 servers, each with its own cron backup script, and a test restore fails — files corrupted, access keys changed, wrong region. Without centralized management, data is lost, and MTTR grows to unacceptable levels. Rclone solves this: support for over 40 cloud providers, client-side encryption with crypt-remote, direct sync between storages, and built-in monitoring via Prometheus. On one project, we migrated 10 TB of backups to Cloudflare R2, configured GitOps for config management, and cut MTTR from 4 hours to 15 minutes — 16x faster than manual restore. You eliminate manual backup checks and nightly alerts about failed syncs. Get a turnkey setup — a working backup infrastructure in 1–3 days.

Common problems in backup organization

  • Wrong access keys, incorrect regions, no encryption — restore can fail without testing.
  • Full sync during work hours kills app performance (link saturation up to 100%).
  • Without regular testing, backups can be corrupt — we saw this on projects where data recovery took a week.
  • Using proprietary utilities complicates migration between clouds.

How Rclone provides client-side encryption?

Use crypt-remote: it encrypts file contents and names client-side, so the provider sees only encrypted blobs. Example config:

[s3-aws]
type = s3
provider = AWS
access_key_id = AKIAIOSFODNN7EXAMPLE
secret_access_key = wJalrXUtnFEMI/K7MDENG/bPxRfiCYEXAMPLEKEY
region = eu-central-1
server_side_encryption = AES256

[r2-cloudflare]
type = s3
provider = Cloudflare
access_key_id = abcdef123456
secret_access_key = secret
endpoint = https://ACCOUNT_ID.r2.cloudflarestorage.com

[b2-backblaze]
type = b2
account = your-account-id
key = your-master-key

[gcs-prod]
type = google cloud storage
project_number = 123456789
service_account_file = /etc/rclone/gcs-sa.json
bucket_policy_only = true

# Encrypted overlay on top of S3
[s3-encrypted]
type = crypt
remote = s3-aws:my-backups
filename_encryption = standard
directory_name_encryption = true
password = your-encryption-password
password2 = your-salt

Key feature — crypt-remote: even if cloud account keys are leaked, data is inaccessible without the encryption password. The password should be stored in a secret manager (Vault, Bitwarden). Per Rclone documentation, crypt-remote provides end-to-end encryption not visible to the provider.

Why choose a multi-cloud backup scheme?

Multi-cloud eliminates vendor lock-in and reduces risk: if one provider is down, data is restored from another. Rclone supports direct sync between clouds without intermediate local download. For example, copy backups from S3 to Cloudflare R2 with one command:

rclone copy s3-aws:my-backups r2-cloudflare:my-backups --transfers 8 --progress

Multi-cloud also optimizes egress costs. Backblaze B2 and Cloudflare R2 offer free egress, saving up to 30% compared to AWS S3. For 10 TB monthly transfer, that can save about $2000.

How to automate backups with Rclone?

For automation, we use scripts with cron/systemd timer and alerts via Healthchecks.io or Prometheus + Alertmanager. Example script:

#!/bin/bash
set -euo pipefail

BACKUP_DIR=/backups
REMOTE="s3-encrypted:prod-server1/$(date +%Y/%m/%d)"
LOG=/var/log/rclone-upload.log

rclone copy "$BACKUP_DIR" "$REMOTE" \
    --transfers 8 \
    --bwlimit "08:00,50M 00:00,off" \
    --log-file "$LOG" \
    --log-level INFO \
    --stats 60s

EXIT_CODE=$?

if [ $EXIT_CODE -eq 0 ]; then
    curl -fsS -m 10 https://hc-ping.com/YOUR-UUID
    logger "rclone upload to $REMOTE: success"
else
    curl -fsS -m 10 "https://hc-ping.com/YOUR-UUID/fail"
    logger -p user.err "rclone upload to $REMOTE: failed (exit $EXIT_CODE)"
fi

We configure parallel transfers (transfers) and bandwidth limiting (bwlimit) to avoid saturating the link during work hours. For test environments, we can mount remote storage as a filesystem via FUSE:

mkdir /mnt/s3-backups
rclone mount s3-encrypted:prod-server1 /mnt/s3-backups \
    --daemon \
    --allow-other \
    --vfs-cache-mode full \
    --vfs-cache-max-size 10G

Provider comparison

Provider Egress Cost-efficiency Features
AWS S3 high medium Server-side encryption, Glacier
Backblaze B2 free low B2 hard delete, low price
Google Cloud Storage paid medium Bucket Policy Only, Nearline
Cloudflare R2 free low Zero egress, S3 compatible

Configuration parameters for typical scenarios

Scenario transfers bwlimit retention
Daily database backup 4 20M 30 days
Weekly file sync 8 50M 3 months
Project archive 2 10M 1 year

How we set up Rclone: step by step

On a project with 50 servers, we migrated backups to Cloudflare R2 with client-side encryption, monitoring via Prometheus, and alerts in Telegram. We used GitOps for config management and a Helm chart for script deployment.

  1. Diagnose current infrastructure and data volume.
  2. Choose provider and storage scheme (single/multi-cloud) considering egress and SLA.
  3. Configure Rclone config files, including crypt-remote and bandwidth limits.
  4. Deploy automation scripts with monitoring (Prometheus + Grafana or Healthchecks).
  5. Document the restore process and test on real data.

What's included in our work
